The Lake of Monate is located in the middle of the region of the lakes and is surrounded by woods.
Its surroundings offer very attractive areas that can easily be reached in a short time. As follows we suggest a route through the most charming sites.

We would strongly recommend you allow yourself the time to visit all of them. A vehicle is absolutely necessary.

Sesto Calende: Take direction South from La Vigna. In about 10 minutes you will reach the town of Sesto Calende, located at the foot of the Lake Maggiore, at the mouth of the Ticino River.
You can take a walk along the shores and from here you can start your trip towards the North of Lake Maggiore, following direction Angera.

Angera: About 10 kms from Sesto Calende. This town offers an incomparable Medieval castle (Rocca d’Angera) which houses a beautiful dolls’ exhibition, with over 1000 dolls that date back to centuries ago. This museum is one of the most important in Europe. From the castle you can enjoy an extraordinary sight over the Lake, especially at sunset.
Not far away from Angera you can visit the “Museo dei Trasporti”, which offers an overview of 200 years of history of means of transport.

Leggiuno: Further to the North you will get to the town of Leggiuno where you can visit the Monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso, built on a cliff. The Monastery can be reached in 10 minutes by foot from a flight of steps, or by boat from Laveno

Laveno Mombello: Moving towards North from Leggiuno you get to Laveno Mombello, where you can stroll along the promenade, take a ferry and reach the opposite shore of the lake, or reach the top of the nearby mountain (with the cable way) where you can enjoy beautiful walks and a wonderful view.

Laveno and the cableway

There is aslo a cableway theat brings you over the mountain. Here you can have beautiful walks.

From Laveno you now have two options: stay at the lake, or drive to the city of Varese

 On the lake:

Borroman Islands: These Islands (called Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola Pescatori) can be easily reached from Stresa, where you can leave your car and hire a little motorboat. The most beautiful one is Isola Bella, well known around the world for its beautiful Italian gardens, but we suggest you also visit the other two islands.
Stresa is a very nice town, with a charming promenade and an enormous 5-stars hotel, attended by wealthy tourists since the beginning of the 20th century

Arona: Take direction South from Stresa. Arona is a tourist town where you can enjoy the promenade and the shops. Don’t forget to visit the bronze Statue of San Carlo Borromeo (also known as San Carlone). You can step inside the statue and reach its head via a stairway so that looking out of the statue’s eyes, you will have a breathtaking sight , overlooking the lake.

From Arona you can now move back to Sesto Calende.

Towards Varese:

Casalzuigno:  Is only a few kilometres from Varese, it is the seat of “Villa della Porta Bozzolo”, a beautiful Villa with a marvellous Italian garden, property of FAI (Fondo dell’Ambiente Italiano)

Gavirate: On the outskirts of Gavirate we suggest a visit to the “Chiostro di Voltorre”, a medieval religious construction where cultural activities such as exhibitions and concerts take place.

Varese:You can take a stroll and enjoy some shopping in the city centre especially in the main street (Corso Matteotti) where you will find the best known brands for fashion.
Varese is a very vital city, don’t hesitate to ask us for suggestions on where to go to find what you need.

One of the most interesting sites is Sacro Monte, a little town built on the top of the mountain. Vehicles are not allowed so walking along its streets gives the impression of going back a century.
